“Mermaid” from Calgary: What We Know About Actress Allie Bertram

With her beauty and radiant smile, Allie Bertram will forever be associated with her role as the mermaid Mimmi. But do you know how her life has changed since then? Calgary Ski explores the story of the girl from Calgary who starred in a beloved series while building a family.

Canadian Actress and Dancer

Allie Bertram was born in 1989 in Calgary, where she graduated from the National Sport School. Her incredible flexibility and perfect splits showcased in photos are no surprise—she studied at the International School of Ballet, where she won an award in 2007 for her solo performance. Judges praised her skills and dedication.

An active and adventurous spirit, Allie enjoyed outdoor activities and travel. During her time at the National Sport School, she climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. To commemorate the achievement, she posed en pointe in ballet positions against the breathtaking backdrop of the summit, resulting in stunning photographs.

Allie tried her luck on the dance competition show So You Think You Can Dance Canada, held in Calgary, where she placed second.

In 2010, she left Calgary for Vancouver, driven by dreams, opportunities, and ambitions to establish herself as both a dancer and an actress.

Mako Mermaids

Allie Bertram gained fame for her role in the Australian youth TV series Mako Mermaids (a spin-off of H2O: Just Add Water). The series was announced in 2011, filmed in 2012, and premiered in summer 2013. It ran for three seasons.

In 2016, a new season of Mako Mermaids aired, featuring Allie as Mimmi, a mermaid from the Northern Waters who later joined the Southern pod. Mimmi, portrayed by Allie, was a kind, trusting, shy, and gifted character. She loved learning and was fascinated by life on land, often curious about humans and their ways. As an expert in potions, Mimmi was revealed to be Zac’s sister in Seasons 2 and 3.

Filmography

In addition to her role as Mimmi, Allie is remembered for playing Kim in the movie Rebel. However, her acting career did not end there.

Analyzing Allie’s filmography, she began acting in 2009. She appeared in Being Erica, played a girl in a car in Supernatural, and portrayed Zoe in Smallville, among other minor roles. While these parts were less prominent than her portrayal of Mimmi, they nonetheless highlighted her talent as an actress from Calgary.

Personal Life

Allie married Canadian hockey player Andrew Cogliano on August 3, 2017, after dating for seven years.

Like many women, Allie faced the question of balancing family and career.

After their wedding in 2017, the couple was expecting a child, but they tragically experienced a miscarriage in October, a devastating event for the pair. They overcame the loss with the support of friends and family. In February 2019, Allie and Andrew welcomed their long-awaited daughter, Lottie Philomena Cogliano.

The couple continued to grow their family. On January 8, 2021, their second daughter, Olive Bea Cogliano, was born.

On January 5, 2023, Allie gave birth to their third child, Poppy James Cogliano. She shared the joyous news and photos on her Instagram page.

While Allie’s acting career is currently on pause, her focus on her family, which includes three children and a dog, brings her immense joy. Fans hope to see her return to the screen in new roles, but she will always be remembered as the beloved “Mermaid from Mako Island.”
